What is  Alpha Phenylacetoacetonitrile used for?

This chemical has the primary use in research and development works and in analytical uses in the labs. There are no other legal uses of this medicine.

The synthesis of Alpha Phenylacetoacetonitrile:

First of all, in 60 gm of clean sodium 2.6-gram atoms is taken along with 700cc of absolute alcohol. A sodium ethoxide solution is made using this, in a 2-1 round-bottomed flask that has a reflux condenser fitted to it. To this hot solution, a mixture of 234 g or 2 moles of pure benzyl cyanide and 264 g or 3 moles of dry ethyl acetate is added, after which it is shaken properly. In order to close the condenser, a calcium chloride tube is used. By using a steam bath, the solution is heated for two hours after which you need to leave it overnight.  You can see that lumps are formed in the mixture the next morning. Now you have to use a wooden rod for stirring the mixture, in order to break the lumps. After this, it is cooled to a temperature of −10° using a freezing mixture. ‘Maintain this temperature for 2 hours. Use 6-in. Büchner funnels to collect the sodium salt which is washed using 250-cc. portions of ether 4 times in the funnel. After this, a colourless filter cake can be found that corresponds to 250–275 g of dry sodium salt, or 69–76 per cent of the calculated amount. The combined filtrates are to be placed in the freezing mixture. Dissolve the sodium salt which is still wet with ether, in 1.3l of distilled water at room temperature and then cools the solution to  0°.  Precipitate nitrile by adding 90cc glacial acetic acid slowly and shaking vigorously.y maintaining the temperature below 10°. Then by the help of suction filtration, the precipitate has to be separated and then washed for 4 times in 250 cc water by the help of a funnel. Now a moist cake of α-Phenylacetoacetonitrile, with a weight of 300 g corresponding to 188-206 g can be obtained. This is 59-64% dry with a melting point of 87–89° that is suitable for most purposes.

If you need to recrystallise the crude chemical, you have to dissolve the moist cake in 100cc of hot methyl alcohol. Filter the solution and cool it by stirring it to get a temperature of  −10°. By the help of suction filtration, you can filter the crystals and wash it one time on the filter with 40cc of methyl alcohol cooled to −10°. You will notice that in the dry condition, the product has a weight of  173–191 g. (54–60 per cent) with a  melting point of  88.5–89.5°. The filtrates and washings from the separation of sodium salt need to be placed in a 5-1. flask. Dilute it with ice cold water till the flask is full. By syphoning, the lower layer can be removed. Most of the ether can be removed through the process of decantation and after which the remaining can be separated using a separatory funnel.

In the same way, extract the aqueous layer two times with 500 cc portions of ether after which you can discard the ether extracts.

The remaining ether can be removed in the aqueous layer at reduced pressure by using a suction pump to suck air through the solution for an hour. Precipitate the α-Phenylacetoacetonitrile by adding 60cc of glacial acetic acid.

In case oil is thrown out, place the flask in the ice bath till the precipitate is crystalline. Use suction filtration for separating the crystals and washing it four times in a funnel with 50cc of water. In dry condition, the tan-coloured substance has a weight of 50-55g which has a melting point of  83–86°. Then dissolve it in the methyl alcohol mother liquors from the crystallization of the first lot. The resulting solution is boiled with a small amount of Norite. It is filtered and cooled to −10°. The crystals have to be collected which are formed, by the help of a filter and they can be washed using 10cc of cold methyl alcohol, after which it has to be dried. A 43-48 gram substance is obtained having a pale straw colour which has a melting point of 87–89°. It is recrystallized from 25cc pure methyl alcohol, which is washed using 10cc  of cold methyl alcohol. A 37–41 g substance is obtained with a melting point of  88.5–89.5°. This generates a total material of this much purity of 210–232 g which is 66–73% of the theoretical amount.
